Perhaps we should call these "unproven therapies" since many of them are on the American Cancer Society's infamous black list. Simply because something is "unproven" does not mean that it has been "disproven." And if a therapy fits the following—

—odds are it will stay on the black list because no one is going to spend a dime to prove its effectiveness. Medicine is a business. Cancer is a business. The FDA is running a protection racket, protecting drug companies and the AMA from anyone with an inexpensive and effective treatment for money making diseases.

The following therapies are not guaranteed to work, at least by us. They are presented to you for information purposes only. For many, their effectiveness has been shown in limited clinical trials, but each one, by itself, is not enough. Everything works, when you do everything.

Using an alternative therapy is not holistic, it is simply one rung in the ladder you must climb to reach your goal of perfect health. Some of these therapies can be used as preventative measures, but, even a preventative measure can help to fight an existing cancer, when used with a life style change and other therapies. Work your program!

In the 1930s, somatids (Latin for "tiny bodies") were discovered. They were called the basis of all life, and according to Gaston Naessens, they are "probably the precursor of DNA, and undoubtedly capable of transforming energy into matter." Hard to tell if they are really the basis of all life, but they cannot be destroyed by 3000º temperatures or by HCL (300 years after they dig you up, they will find live somatids), though bombarding them with electrons will destroy them, thus they were never discovered with the electron microscope. Gaston Naessens, who was chased out of France for practicing medicine without a license, took an interest in the life cycle of somatids. He has produced a video explaining the life cycle of the somatid. Spending over a decade researching somatids, he has also discovered that the first sign of disease is when the somatids begin producing yeast, and veer off their normal three stage life cycle to a sixteen stage life cycle.

He developed 714X, a camphor derivative, that returns somatids to their normal life cycle and, according to his studies, reverses degenerative diseases. Additionally, Gaston Naessens has developed ANA-10 from his work in somatidian biology for use in AIDS, and clinical trials are underway. You should pick up a copy of You Don't Have to Die—Unraveling the AIDS Myth, by Leon Chaitow, ND, DO and James Stroheker. In it you will read about Barry, who had full-blown AIDS, went to Naessens and was put on a detoxication program, dietary changes, supplements and lifestyle changes. He received 714-X injections and regained full health.

In the seventies, two researchers from Penn State visited the Sao Paulo, Brazil area and discovered the local natives to be extremely healthy with a very low rate of disease. The longevity rate was disproportionately high with people living well over 100. Their secret? It was a simple mushroom, they told the researchers, the agaricus mushroom (Agaricus Blazei Murill or ABM).

Subsequent studies over the next 25 years have shown the ABM to stimulate the immune system and promote natural mechanisms to battle infectious disease and cancers. ABM stimulates lymphocyte T-cell and Helper T-cell production. The polysaccharide contained in ABM stimulates production of interferon and interleukin that indirectly function to destroy and prevent the proliferation of cancer cells. Additionally, ABM turned out to be a very powerful antiviral agent preventing viruses from entering tissues.

Normally, the polysaccharides found in fungus only affect solid cancers, however the polysaccharide in ABM is effective against Ehrich's ascites carcinoma, sigmoid colonic cancer, ovarian cancer, breast cancer, lung cancer, and liver cancer as well as against solid cancers.

In Japan, ABM was found to eliminate all cancerous tumors in 90% of the experimental mice. Additionally, when the mice were fed ABM as a preventative and then injected with a very powerful cancer causing agent (Sarcoma 180), 99.4% of them showed no tumor growth. Conventional medicine has nothing as powerful as this.

The studies in Japan showed ABM to be 80% more effective than the world's number one cancer drug, PSK. It contains much higher levels of beta glucans than the other medicinal mushrooms (Maitake, Shiitake, and Reishi). It stimulates NK (Natural Killer) cell activity at a rate higher than MGN-3.

The studies in Japan were so successful that today Japan is now buying over 90% of the available ABM from Brazil.

A special note: Japan's chief chemotherapy for cancer comes from a mushroom and is nontoxic. Japan employs chemotherapeutic drugs that are toxic only after trying the nontoxic therapies first. In the 1970's researchers noticed that an unusual percentage of people in a small town in Brazil (Piedate, in Sao Paulo) had a very low rate of a number of serious adult diseases. The common factor in these people's diets was the ABM (Agaricus Blazei Murill) mushroom known to the locals as 'Cogumelo de Deus' or 'Mushroom of God'.

Researchers have isolated large amounts of polysaccharides in this mushroom which appear to significantly boost the immune system. Polysaccharides are made up of individual sugar molecules chained together to form larger sugars. The polysaccharides appear to activate a type of white blood cell known as a macrophage which filters the blood by destroying viruses, bacteria, and perhaps even cancer cells. Shiitake, Maitake and Reishi also contain these polysaccharides.

ABM is also known as Himematsutake and can be used in your cooking the same way as other mushrooms are. This change, by itself, could help prevent colon cancer."

And finally, Dr. H. R. McDaniel, M.D., pathologist and researcher at the Dallas-Fort Worth Medical Center, has said, "The use of Aloe Vera will be the most important single step forward in the treatment of diseases in the history of mankind."

In a study of 300 breast cancer patients on anticoagulants [first reported to us in Alternatives], one eighth of them died from breast cancer, but not one developed metastases. Anticoagulants stop fibrin from forming. Fibrin (a natural substance needed for blood to clot) has a pretty significant role in the development of metastases: it coats maverick cells in the blood stream, and thus protects them from the immune system, and it gives off a signal to start angiogenesis, the growth of new blood vessels (which a metastasis would need in order to root and grow).

Antineoplastons are a non toxic therapy developed by Dr Stanislaw R Burzynski, MD, PhD which are currently undergoing FDA monitored Phase II Trials. They are slated to be approved by the FDA for certain cancers, and a pill form has already been approved and is available through prescription.

We mention antioxidants here because some readers will feel we've overlooked an important factor to preventing and fighting cancer. Cancer begins in the cell. Cellular changes are brought about by toxins, alcohol, smoke, malnutrition, dehydration, free radicals, and the aging process. Antioxidants turn these free radicals and their precursors (the toxins) into harmless chemicals. Your antioxidants are vitamins C, D, A, E, and selenium. New antioxidants are being discovered (invented) all the time: Pycnogenol, Amrit Kalash, Microhydrin just to name a few. Our most recent discovery is Electrolyzed water. Prevention is the key here, and incidentally, antioxidants also play a large role in the prevention heart disease and strokes. Top

Anvirzel is a patented extract from the Nerium Oleander, a common house plant. It is very toxic, the plant, that is, and if you insist on eating it, it will kill you. However, the extract (Anvirzel) has been the twenty year study of a Dr Ozel from Turkey.

Dr Ozel foolishly told everyone that his drug could cure cancer. It is pretty harmless. There is no known overdose amount. It is not as safe as water, but it's not nearly as dangerous as Vioxx. But Dr Ozel really goofed, and foolishly told the authorities that his drug could cure cancer, and that vanquished your chances getting this substance right now; this substance that is as safer than Tylenol.

Dr Merrill Garnett, on the other hand, after creating Poly-MVA, registered it in Mexico as an antioxidant. Poly-MVA can be bought over the counter. Anvirzel can only be gotten by flying down to Honduras and spending a week at a hospital. And then, if you want it, you will pay 10 times its cost of production (minimum) when Poly-MVA isn't even sold at double its cost. Good move, Dr Ozel.

Anvirzel is a drug of the future (you can't get it presently). It certainly doesn't fall into any categories of present day chemotherapeutic drugs. According to our sources, studies prove it is non toxic. Secondly, studies show it attacks tumors; studies in bladder cancer, breast cancer, and prostate cancer show very very positive results. Thirdly, it seems to boost the patient's immune system (chemotherapy to date has destroyed immune systems on a regular basis). And finally, Anvirzel has a role in uncovering the cancer cells: it seems that cancer cells camouflage themselves and hide from the immune cells. Anvirzel helps the immune system hunt them out, directing the attack on cancer cells.

Anvirzel is made in Texas presently, but is available only in Honduras. You can fly down to Honduras to get a six month supply, costing under $9,000.00. The FDA has approved clinical trials at the Cleveland Cancer Clinic, and a report was expected to be issued in April, 2000. So far, we've heard nothing. Update: We have been told by an insider that the Anvirzel in Honduras might not be the same Anvirzel being tested in the US.

Now even though Anvirzel comes from a plant and has no toxicity, it is considered a drug. If passed by the FDA (the gov't agency that runs a protection racket for the pharmaceutical industry), expect an over-the-counter version to be used as a preventative and immune system booster.

Reports that slipped out in late 1999 showed that Anvirzel reversed AIDS, no matter what the phase of the disease, arthritis, psoriasis, hepatitis C, and even diabetes in some cases. Initially, Anvirzel was thought to work only on cancers found early, however, very positive results have been found in people given just weeks to live. To top this all off, Anvirzel seems to be the first cancer remedy to show positive results for leiomyosarcoma, probably the deadliest of cancers. Anvirzel also crosses the blood-brain barrier (like Poly-MVA) and gives hope to people with brain tumors.

If given a chance, this could turn the world of medicine upside down: sometimes cancer cannot be controlled or conquered simply because the organs it has attacked are too far gone. Anvirzel reduces pain, allowing the patient to die with dignity at home, with very little, if any, pain medications. We received one story of a patient with advanced pancreatic cancer, who the day before he died, ran a board meeting at his office. He took his first pain medication one hour before dying. He also wrote a letter to Ozelle Pharmaceuticals, Inc., the company that makes Anvirzel, thanking them for the extra time he was given and the quality of his last days.

Sadly, if the medical community wants to bury this new drug, they can. It's October 2001, and nothing so far. No news, is not good news. Drug companies are already trying to buy it out, and probably bury it. Paranoia? Look at the history of Hydrazine Sulfate.

It is no longer amazing to discover something by accident. Scientists do some of their best work in the dark, by suddenly stumbling over something, only to find in the cold light of day, that what they stumbled upon, was an amazing discovery (like penicillin, perhaps).

The wormwood plant has been around for years. It is an annual that grows practically everywhere, but way back in history, it had uses that somehow were forgotten.

In 1970, archeologists rediscovered the phytochemical (plant chemical) Artemisinin inside a tomb dating back to 168 BC, for stored near the deceased were medicines and text explaining the preparation and use of these medicine.

Artemisinin was used primarily in the treatment of malaria, though it had been used to fight parasites and since it has some anti-inflammatory properties, it was used for hemorrhoids.

Artemisinin reacts with a high concentration of iron (ferrous compounds), something found in high concentrations in the malaria parasite. When artemisinin meets up with this high iron concentration, a chemical reaction occurs creating free radicals that attack cell membranes, breaking them apart and killing them.

It is artemisinin’s affinity for iron that places it in the spotlight for a brand new weapon against cancer.

Here is a little biochemistry for you: Iron is required for cell division. What is it cancer cells do more than healthy cells? They divide at a very high rate. So, in order to divide at this high rate, cancer cells have to accumulate high concentrations of iron. In fact, the surface of cancer cells have many more iron attracting receptors than on the surface of a normal, healthy cell. Do you see where this is leading?

The Journal of Life Science (70 (2001): 49-56) reported on a study out of the University of Washington, conducted by Drs Narenda Singh and Henry Lai. So far, this is the most extensive study done in the US on artemisinin.

The study was conducted in a laboratory in tissue samples (in vitro) as opposed to a study on animals or humans (in vivo). Using a radiation resistant variety of breast cancer cells (that also had a high propensity for accumulating iron) artemisinin proved itself to have a 75% cancer kill rate after just 8 hours; and almost a 100% kill rate in just 24 hours.

Artemisinin is effective against a wide variety of cancers as shown in a series of successful experiments. The most effective is leukemia and colon cancer. Intermediate activities were also shown against melanoma, breast, ovarian, prostate, CNS and renal cancer. Although artemisinin is insoluble in water, it is able to cross the blood brain barrier (the water soluble artesunate is the weakness among the derivates) and may be particularly suitable for curing brain tumors, together with Poly-MVA.

According to Dr Rowen, MD in his newsletter Second Opinion, a family of physicians in Vietnam had used artemisinin to treat cancer for years. For over 400 patients treated in the past ten years, using dietary and lifestyle changes and artemisinin, they realized a 50 to 60 percent long-term remission rate. Artemisinin has proven itself to be nontoxic at the required dosage level for long periods of time; and that no significant toxicity in short-term use for malaria at high dose of up to 70 mg/kg per day has been reported either.

Now the weird thing about this herb, the wormwood, is that you can find the plant growing wild, pick it, take it to an herbalist, and it might have no artemisinin in it: not all wormwood plants contain artemisinin. So there’s no use buying the herb bulk.

When the wormwood herb contains artemisinin, it is in one of three forms (some naturopaths use all three, others a combination of two):

Because of artemisinin’s activity, because it attacks using free radicals to destroy the cell walls of cells carrying iron, we need a good antioxidant to help clean up this mess. Many recommend megadoses of vitamin C daily. However, using this in conjunction with Poly-MVA contraindicates the use of vitamin C in large doses. However, this doesn’t mean that hydrogen peroxide therapy, ozone therapy, or any of the oxygenation therapies cannot be used with artemisinin to help create an environment in which cancer cells cannot live and begin to self destruct. In fact, many other therapies are suggested when using artemisinin.

High doses are neurotoxic. (Bad for the brain.) People experience trouble walking, problems with nerve and the spinal column and pain response, respiration slows, gets depressed, and cardiac arrest in large animals has been witnessed, but under very high doses.

In humans, so far only one person has had a serious side effect, which was referred to as a "first-degree heart block." It is assumed that doses up to 20,000mg per 70kg male is a safe dosage, although long-term toxicity is not known at this time.

Therapeutic levels (dosages) for those with active cancers can be 1,000 mgs per day, divided into 4 parts), while some physicians recommend 1,600mg per day based upon a 100 pound female. It is a "cooling" herb according to Traditional Chinese Medicine. If you find yourself tingling (too cool) you might want to drop the dosage a bit.

Artemisinin should be taken with food. Using an essential fatty acid (flax oil, cod liver oil, lecithin, wheat germ oil) will help absorption.

Artemisinin is not considered a "stand-alone" cancer cure, but part of an overall, aggressive, anti-cancer program. High doses of pancreatic enzymes (on an empty stomach), CoQ10 supplementation, detoxication programs and lab work should all be employed when using artemisinin.

A bolus is like a suppository, used either vaginally or anally. Dr Schulze has created a bolus that can be made into suppositories by mixing the materials and placing them into the freezer. He recommends them (first you must cleanse your colon and liver, so see the article on "Cleaning House") for cervical, uterine, ovarian, colon cancer, and any lower abdominal cancers (and for cysts), though the herbs are cleansing and contain anti-tumor properties, and absorbed anally they can help fight many cancers. This formula has proven itself over and over again for cervical dysplasia (it would be extremely productive to fight dysplasia with a mixture of this bolus and an immunomodulator or immuno stimulant such as MGN-3 or Agaricus mushrooms, or Aloe Vera (see Your Immune System - The Rest of the Story).

He recommends inserting the bolus at night, and keeping it inside as long as possible (two days if administered into the cervix). For cervical problems, try to keep it in all the next day, two days would be best, and in the evening, you should douche. His favorite douche is a pint of water with a couple of tablespoons fresh squeezed lemon or lime juice, or a couple of tablespoons of raw organic apple cider vinegar. However, many people find this formula to be drying, and Dr Christopher (Dr Schulze's mentor) recommends Yellow Dock Tea (which can be ordered from The Herb Finder: www.theherbfinder.com). Do this for six days; rest on the seventh. Keep in mind you might have to do this for a period of six weeks to six months. Herbal remedies, for the most part, take time to work.

Latest Update: we have tried for over six months to contact Dr Schulze and get his actual recipe for this bolus so that you could make it at home. However, no one answers our calls, and we really do not know how to take this except to say that they are not answering our calls. The following was discovered after a nerve-wracking search of my notes (over 9-years-old) stashed away in my back room, and gathered from interviews with Dr Schulze.

Dr Schulze's bolus: Equal parts of Squaw Vine herb, Slippery Elm Bark, Goldenseal root, Yellow Dock root, Comfrey root, Marshmallow root, Chickweed herb, Mullein leaf all of these powered (using a coffee grinder, not a blender for they heat up the herbs, or a mortar and pestle and a little elbow grease). This is the original formula, however, to potentiate these ingredients (make them work even better, as well as add a little extra kick to them) you may add garlic bulb, cayenne pepper, and Tea Tree oil to the herbs. Do not be afraid of the cayenne pepper, it is actually soothing and is not caustic (unless you find an open sore). Now, melt some cocoa butter and mix it all up in your hands and shape it into something that looks close to your pointing finger. You can store these in the freezer for a long period.

This is much cheaper than Shark Cartilage and is being presently studied here in America with, ostensibly, very good results. However, the studies have been fudged, the success rate of 99% is highly inflated, and the people conducting these studies seem to lack even quintessential ethics. Cancell was designed in a scientist's dream only a research scientist could possibly dream. A body has a cancer. The cancer is hot. It grows so fast, requires so much energy, the cool body is overworked struggling to feed the cancer. Suddenly a substance is introduced into the body. The substance has one objective, to lower the overall energy of the body. As the process begins, the cancer starts to starve, it bubbles, breaks up, and melts from starvation. The cancer dies from energy starvation and is cleaned up by the immune system.

The dream became a reality, at least according to 20,000 people who claim Cancell has saved their lives. In 1936 James Sheridan had been working as a biochemist for Dow Chemical. He began experimenting with substances that could manipulate the energies in the body, and when he discovered he could manipulate them, he got serious. By 1947, without Dow's blessings or support, he developed a substance that would cure about 38% of the cancer cases he had tried it on. By 1983, he had something that was approximately 80% effective. He had been at it for 47 years.

James Sheridan and his substance have been pushed around by the FDA, the NCI, and the ACS so much that in 1984 he finally gave up. Since then, Edward J. Sopcak has taken over. From his home, he has made up over 30,000 bottles of Cancell and has shipped them to people in need all over the country, for not one cent.

We hesitate to mention the story of Cancell, because a court injunction has closed down Mr Sopcak's efforts: he may not distribute in any manner this absolutely harmless substance.

Cansema is an escharotic (its original form, though below you can see they've since developed internal versions), applied topically. According to the developers, is supposed to be selective in its action. If you place it on healthy skin, it might "warm" up a bit, the skin can turn pink and become mildly irritated, but that’s all. If you place it on a malignant lesion, then it goes to work. They even say that people buy it and apply it to their moles to find out if they are malignant. This is a silly way to get a diagnosis, but if it works, what the heck.

The people at Alpha Omega Labs (who produce Cansema) had the audacity to claim that every empirical case study to date has shown that Cansema has removed successfully every malignant carcinoma, adenocarcinoma (breast cancer), and even melanoma to which it has been applied. If it doesn’t work for you, they even give you back your money. No drug company has ever offered to do this.

The people at Alpha Omega Labs had been working with physicians from around the world for year, and producing some very interesting products including tinctures of the ABM Mushroom and formulas using Graviola. They were at www.altcancer.com but the FDA has since closed them down.

Note also that they had created three internal formulas: Tonic I, Tonic III, and Cansema Capsules. The Tonic III contains: Aloe vera (as a base medium), bioenergized extracts of the following cancerolytic [cancer killing] botanicals: graviola (Annona muricata) from the Amazonia, Andrographis paniculata, neem (Azadirachta indica A. Jus), chaparral (Larrea mexicata), and hydronium solution to enhance and preserve contents. Contains no alcohol or artificial chemicals.

The capsules and Tonic I contain: chaparral, galangla, rhubarb root, burdock, buckthorn, red clover, purple lapacho, zinc glutomate / zinc chloride, ascorbal palmitate. You might recognize some of these from the Hoxsey and ESSIAC formulas. Chaparral is one of the ingredients in the Jason Winters Tea. As science plods on, despite the Pharmaceutical Industry's wishes that all herbs were banned and the American Cancer Society's desire to steer you toward the slash, burn, and poison therapies, we are discovering more and more the anti-tumor effects of our ancient herbs.

Chaparral has been on the FDA's hit list for some 20 years now. They almost got it entirely removed from the market place. Then Chemex Pharmaceuticals applied for and received from the FDA drug status for their concoction to cure skin cancer. It's active ingredient? NDGA or nordihydroguauretic acid which comes from the Chaparral plant, a very potent antioxidant. It has been used by Natives of North America for centuries as a blood cleanser and cancer cure.

This is a recipe for a black paste very similar to the cansema and is a preferred paste for melanoma and all suspect skin cancer like lesions. This paste also has worked well for all manner of cancers provided that they have become exposed to or close to the surface of the skin.

1/2 cup powdered Blood Root (Sanguinaria Canadensis)
1/2 cup Zinc Chloride, crystals or liquid
1/2 cup common white flour
1 1/2 cup warm water
100ml Chaparral extract or 100gm of powdered Chaparral (Larrea mexicana)

Pre-mix all but the water, thoroughly, before adding to the water. Using a stainless steel double boiler. Put in water, then stir in the other ingredients. Stir in well using a wooden spoon. Cook for thirty minutes over boiling water, stirring constantly. Application is much the same as cansema. Apply a thin layer (2-3mm) of the paste over the affected area and cover for 24 hours. Then remove the covering but do not disturb the lesion at all, do not attempt to pull the cancer out at any time, it should fall out in 10 days or so. Some people with sensitive skin put Vaseline (however we recommend coconut oil or Healon PF) around the cancer so that the paste does not irritate the skin.

At the Wellness Directory of Minnesota, we hate to give false hope to anyone, however, we must tell you that, according to Morton Walker, DPM, in an article entitled, "The Carnivora Cure for Cancer, AIDS and Other Pathologies" published in Immune Perspectives, Summer 1994: "[The Carnivora extract] is highly effective for the total elimination of the HIV virus in vivo from human blood and may be considered a cure for the autoimmune deficiency syndrome AIDS."

In 1988, the active component of Carnivora, plumbagin, was isolated. It has proven itself to be, in vivo and in vitro (in live subjects and in the laboratory), a powerful immuno-stimulant. Since 1981, over 2000 patients have been treated with Carnivora, including President Reagan. (Follow physicians and the rich when they get cancer; they usually avoid, at all costs, chemotherapy.)

Studies have shown it to reduce tumor weight with no side effects, and in some cases there have been complete remission. Carnivora is non-toxic and non-mutagenic (does not cause cellular mutations).

One patient who used Carnivora extract was Ronald Asti, a person with AIDS who was suffering from ARC (AIDS-related complex). He traveled to Germany for treatment, and returned four months later, completely free of AIDS, his blood showing no signs of the HIV-1 antigen after multiple tests.

A commercial Carnivora product is manufactured by the Carnivora Research Company and, thus far, can be still be purchased for shipment to the US. However, Dr Helmut Keller of Bad Steben, Germany, states that he would prefer to induce treatment himself, and then discharge the patient back to her/his physician with an optimal schedule for treatment.

This was a favorite of Edgar Cayce (see the article Breast Cancer for a short biography on Edgar Cayce). For tumors near the surface, he consistently recommended them. It was thought by many to pull the tumors from the body, however, clinical research also shows increased T-cell, NK (natural killer cells), and macrophage activity. One of the best books we can recommend for castor oil packs (besides anything by Edgar Cayce) is by Dr Dana Myatt, MD, called A Physician's Diary. The ARE® Press publishes books and video and audio cassettes of Edgar Cayce's work, as well as those who use his methods. At nearly every health foods store we've visited, we found castor oil and wool or cotton flannel pads. The method of using them is quite simple. Spread out the pad and soak it with castor oil. Place it over the infected area (Cayce also recommends placing it over the liver for liver stimulation) and then wrap yourself with an oilcloth to avoid getting the oil all over everything. Place a heating pad (or hot water bottle) over it, and sit back for an hour and watch a comedy on TV. Some recommend an hour minimum, others three hours. You can store your oily pad in a plastic bag, and you need not store it in the refrigerator for castor oil is one of the most stable oils available. Top

As a supplement, cayenne pepper has been used for years for cardiovascular support. It cleans the blood and stimulates the entire system. Dr Christopher, one of the leaders in American Herbal medicine, often called Dr Cayenne, used it to help cure almost every malady that appeared in his office. For stomach ulcers, he recommended one teaspoon of cayenne pepper in a glass of water three times a day, and cured many a stomach ulcer. For those of you who balk at drinking really hot cayenne pepper, you may take the capsules, but always with food. However, for a heart attack, the capsules will not work: Dr Christopher witnessed time and time again that one cup of hot cayenne pepper will stop a heart attack in three minutes or less. A good tincture of cayenne (or drops of some of your stronger hot sauce) will also work. Dr Schulze recommends carrying a cayenne tincture with you at all times in the glove compartment of your car. It might be the only first aid you need.

In a lecture by Dr Richard Shulze, master herbalist, we learned the following: A man had an inoperable brain tumor and told that he might have a 5% chance of survival with chemotherapy. He went home, did a colon/liver detox and started a regimen of ten cups per day of cayenne pepper tea. In three months he returned to his doctor and his x-rays showed a dried up, dead tumor in his head. Dr Shulze explains this cure thusly: Cayenne pepper contains many wonderful phytochemicals, vitamins, and minerals. It cleans the blood allowing hormonal signals to make their way unimpeded through your system, thus the enhanced immune response. In countries that have some very hot cuisine, you find significantly lower cancer and heart disease rates. Top

Commonly used by Asians as part of their diet, the Chinese Bitter Melon (Momordica charantia) is used regularly to clean the blood. In addition to expressing antiviral and anti-tumor effects, the Chinese Bitter Melon exhibits Anti-HIV effects, inhibiting, in the laboratory, infected macrophages and T cells, as well as cell infection. It seems that the proteins in Chinese Bitter Melon (alpha- and beta-momocharin, and MAP-30) deactivate the ribosome function in HIV-infected cells, stop protein synthesis and kill cells that are infected. As the child of a physician/surgeon, I grew up believing that chiropractic care was synonymous with quackery. The medical profession once tried to defame chiropractors into oblivion, but wound up in the Supreme Court where they were told to cease and desist their mudslinging.

Chiropractic care goes back to ancient China. It even predates acupuncture, for as the Chinese knew, you cannot work on the meridians if the nerves are not right. The impact of a perfectly tuned nervous system on the immune system, for a long time, was only a theory. Yet, study after study show that people who receive chiropractic care have a greater immuno-competence than those who do not.

A study conducted in 1975 by Ronald Pero, PhD, showed that individuals with spinal cord injuries were at a greater risk of developing cancer than those with no injuries. He theorized that the nervous system was responsible for regulating and sending messages between parts of the endocrine (glandular) system. So in 1986 he collaborated with Joseph Flesia, DC to measure immuno-competence in individuals who regularly saw a chiropractor and those who did not. The study did not take into consideration variations in diet, though Pero admitted that there was no research thus far that could account for the variance they discovered. And what a variance: people under chiropractic care had a 200% greater immuno-competence than others. [East West, November 1989]

We mentioned clodronate in our second edition of the Wellness Directory of Minnesota™, but held off listing it here for the longest time. Why? Because we cannot get it in America. It is not an alternative, a natural substance, or an herb. It is a drug. One of the few drugs that actually heals something, rather than treat symptoms.

It is nearly 20 years old and is used to fight and reverse osteoporosis. Studies from Europe show it can reverse bone loss and, when mixed with calcium, it will significantly increase lumbar bone density.

Now, if you are paying attention, a majority of breast cancer deaths occur after the cancer has metastasized (spread) to the bones.

The Food and Drug Administration's suppression of clodronate may have caused the premature or needless death of about 30,000 American women each year, based on the Aug. 6, 1998, New England Journal of Medicine study. Since clodronate could have been made available 15 years ago, about 517,000 American breast cancer victims were forced to suffer agonizing bone metastasis, and a total of 450,000 women probably died prematurely because the FDA aggressively denied this drug to cancer patients.

Clodronate is cheap. It is effective. It has minimal side effects. It does not kill cancer cells. It is used as an adjunct to whatever therapy you are using for the single purpose of preventing bone metastases. It is outlawed in America, though there are some expensive rip-offs that the FDA is pushing (protecting American business interests) that are not as safe and not as effective as clodronate.

1988: breast cancer patients with multiple bone metastasis treated with clodronate experienced fewer fractures and less hypercalcemia, with a higher survival rate and no side effects. [Biomed. Pharmacother. (France), 42/2 (111-1160]

1987: two studies showed that oral clodronate successfully reduced a mean serum calcium concentration in 22 our of 25 patients with various types of malignant tumors, and that clodronate is a valuable clinical tool in the management of patients with malignancy-associated hypercalcemia. [Acta. med. Scand. (Sweden), 221/5 (489-494)]

1985: clodronate given to patients with episodes of hypercalcemia and osteolysis due to carcinoma reduced serum calcium in 14 of 17 episodes and bone resorption in all patients. [Br. J. Cancer (England), 51/5 (665-669)]

1984: published in both France and the US, this study concluded that "Clodronate is very effective against osteoclasts," and "Clodronate may be a useful adjuvant in managing metastatic bone disease." [Presse Med. 13/8, 479-482); New England Journal of Medicine, 308/25 (1499-1501)]

According to the Life Extension Foundation, the standard dose for treating cancer is 800 mg of clodronate taken twice daily, though twice this dosage has been used safely. Breast cancer patients might want to consider a 3 - 5 year regimen on clodronate therapy. Blood tests to measure serum calcium levels and kidney function should be done 10 days after initiating clodronate therapy and every one to two months thereafter. In a small minority of patients, clodronate will cause too much calcium to be pulled from the blood to the bone. If you suffer from severe renal insufficiency (a kidney disorder requiring dialysis) you should not use clodronate, nor should you use clodronate if you are pregnant.

Dr William Coley, around the turn of the century, lost a patient to sarcoma (a soft tissue cancer) and was upset enough to begin research on similar cancers. He soon began to notice a repetitive scenario in which recovery of sarcoma followed a serious streptococcal infection.

After experimentation, he developed a serum that came to be known as Coley's Toxins: a mixture of heat-killed bacteria. He treated 312 inoperable cancer patients with his vaccine and 124 were brought into complete remission. Subsequent studies showed a five-year survival rate of 65% percent of inoperable breast cancer, 67% Hodgkin's disease, and 84% of giant cell bone tumors.

Despite these findings, the AMA denounced Coley's Toxins and the vaccine was placed on the American Cancer Society's "Unproven Methods" blacklist. Interestingly enough, it was soon taken off the list as a research team at the Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center began studying methods similar to Coley's. Top

Do not expect this drug to be on the market soon, but it's an amazing discovery. Contortrostatin is a protein extracted from the venom of the Southern Copperhead, a poisonous snake. At the University of Southern California, one study showed that it slowed the growth of tumors in mice implanted with human breast cancer cells by up to 70%. It does not kill cancer cells, but stops their growth. The really excellent news is that it prevented metastases (the spread of cancer) 100% of the time. Like the new antiangiogenesis drugs in the news lately (early 1998), Contortrostatin too stops the growth of new blood vessels, vessels that is needed for the growth and spread of cancer. Top

C-Statin is another of the antiangiogenesis drugs (stops the growth of new blood vessels, however, it is registered as a food supplement. It was developed by Neil Riordan, Founder and president of the Aidan Clinic in Tempe, Arizona.

In 1994 a woman walked into a cancer clinic in Wichita, Kansas (run by Neil's father) wanting to tell her story. She was a 57 year-old who had had a diagnosis of stage 3C ovarian cancer. Her mother had died of ovarian cancer and when her oncologist said that she had possibly a year and a half left if she did chemo, she remembered her mother not doing very well on chemo and she wanted to go another route. So she found herself a shaman/healer who said, "Here, take this tincture from this plant." She took it for 2 years as was declared cancer free. Her doctor, of course, claimed it to be an "act of God." She was still taking her "convolvulus tincture," seven years after her initial diagnosis and she just wanted to tell her story to someone.

The plant turned out to be the Convolvulus Arvensis, or Field Bindweed. It grows all over America and is considered a pest.

Neil began testing this plant, first by putting it on cancer specimens to determine if it was onco-toxic (toxic to the cancer). It was not. Then he tested it to see if it had any immunostimulant properties; perhaps it stimulated the immune system to kick into high gear and attack the cancer. He did find that it was immunosupportive, but not to any degree that would account for this lady's dramatic results. Next he tested it to see if it stopped the growth of new blood vessels. and bingo, that was it.

Interestingly enough, there are antiangiogenesis chemicals in our bodies already. Let's face it, after we are fully grown, we don't need new blood vessels continually growing in our bodies, so these chemicals kick in to stop their growth. We have still other chemicals in our body to kick in the growth of new blood vessels in case we should need them, as in the case of an injury or a pregnancy.

C-Statin is just one of Neil's patented formulas. It comes from the isolated PGMs (proteoglycan molecules) of the Bind Weed that are responsible for this action. It is sold only to healthcare professionals, though, as stated previously, it is registered as a food supplement. It is one of the therapies offered at the Aidan Clinic.

C-Statin can be taken orally, as we see from this lady's testimonial, but it is usually administered intravenously for the best results. Also, it should be noted that not all tumors flourish by the growth of new blood vessels thus, at the Aidan Clinic, each patient gets therapy designed specifically for that person.

D-limonene is a terpene, a compound found in plants. The best source of d-limonene is the oil from orange peels. Researchers at the University of Wisconsin found that when d-limonene was added to the diets of rats who had developed tumors, 90% of them had their tumors disappear completely. In a related study, animals that were given d-limonene one hour before being exposed to known carcinogens, were protected from the effects of the carcinogens at a highly significant rate.

In rats, large doses of d-limonene produce kidney problems, but in dogs, there were no side effects.

D-limonene has yet to be tested on humans, and since very little of the two billion spent annually on cancer research ever makes it to clinical studies, it might never be tested on humans to determine dosages and toxicity levels, if there are any.

In the meanwhile, you can do what most juice experts have been saying for years: juice the orange and the peel together—just make sure your oranges are organically grown. [Alternatives, September 1991; 4: 3] Top

DMSO, used extensively by arthritis sufferers, is an anti-inflammatory that has been shown clinically to relieve pain, increase circulation, repair tissue damage, stop the growth of bacteria and fungi, soothe burns, enlarge small blood vessels, soften scar tissue, and fight degenerative diseases. The FDA has banned its use in medicine, though we are told that some physicians do employ it.

In tests on rats with cancer, DMSO was mixed with hematoxylon, and because the admixture was dyed, they were able to show that it had an affinity for the tumors only. A lymphosarcoma is surrounded by a protoplasm intended to feed the tumor, and it was discovered that the DMSO-hematoxylon mixture wiped out this protoplasm thus starving the tumor.

DMSO is used by Dr Donsbach at his Hospital Santa Monica (www.hospitalsantamonica.com) for much more than cancer, and he reports his patients respond quite well. [Donsbach, Kurt, DC, ND, PhD. Wholistic Cancer Therapy. San Diego: The Rockland Corporation, 1993] Donsbach feels that DMSO assists all the other therapies and agents he employs, and it is one therapy he administers to everyone with cancer: DMSO and hydrogen peroxide infusions. He also mentions a study at New York's Mount Sinai Hospital where mice with leukemia were injected with DMSO and the leukemic cells began for function normally.

The FDA outlaws DMSO for two reasons: the first being that it is a solvent, and they do not know how to handle a substance that can be both a medicine and something you use to clean engine parts; the second reason , according the book DMSO—Nature's Healer by Dr Morton Walker, animal studies showed that injections of DMSO caused dogs to go blind. The FDA jumped on this and stopped its use. Later it was discovered that only in dogs does it cause blindness, but like the ban on L-tryptophan, once it's there, heaven and earth will have to be moved to clear it.

We should mention here that there is an organization of physicians who, though they might or might not recommend DMSO therapies, are up on the latest studies on its use and can provide you with this information. From the Orient, we get this amazing substance that comes in two forms. One highly acidic and the other highly alkaline. The technology began in the seventies, but they could not stabilize the water. In about two to three weeks, the water returned to normal. However, an American company found a way to stabilize the water, and people are using it for chronic, degenerative illnesses.

The alkaline water, used in a cancer regimen, would be classified as one of the Oxidative Therapies, as it charges the terrain with stable oxygen and alkalizes at the same time.

Found in red raspberries, strawberries, blue berries, and certain nuts, the Hollings Cancer Institute at the U of South Carolina recently finished (1999) n years of study showing that ellagic acid:

Raspberries contain the highest amounts of ellagic acid, and it doesn't matter if the fruit is boiled, baked, canned, sugared, dehydrated, or fresh, the ellagic acid is still potent.

One of the most amazing things about raspberries is that one cup per week stops prostate cancers (all prostate cancers) from growing for one week.

Two more things are currently underway at the Hollings Cancer Institute: they're patenting a process that extracts the ellagic acid from raspberries and, hopefully, it will not be destroyed in the stomach (ellagic acid, so far, cannot be taken as a supplement, and must be eaten as the fruit) and they are conducting a double blind (neither patient nor physician knows who's taking what) study involving 500 cervical cancer patients.

There is a multi-level marketing company that claims to have created a form of ellagic acid that can be taken orally. It is called Ellagic Insurance Formula, and in addition to containing ellagic acid, it also contains OPC's (like Pycnogenol®) which are potent flavanoids (like Resveratrol) that act as antioxidants, concentrated Green Tea, and vitamins C, E, A and selenium. This is, if it works, a very powerful cancer fighter and preventative measure. I'm sure if you type in Ellagic Insurance Formula at any internet search engine, you'll find a half a ton of sites selling it.

Please note: if you are eating raspberries for their ellagic acid you must eat them on an empty stomach, before you eat anything else, or eat them in yogurt, as the curdling of the yogurt in the stomach will protect them. If your fruit sits in your stomach too long, because you've eaten something prior, stomach acid will destroy its healthful properties.
